Hamby Young Wins $60 million Contract for 120-mile Transmission Line and Substation
Key 345kV transmission line enhances transmission network and alleviates constraints
Aurora, Ohio, September 1, 2005 – Hamby Young, a leading high voltage material packaging group in the
U.S., won a $60 million contract for material procurement and logistics for construction of a 193-km (120-
mile) transmission line and substation in Grimes, Iowa. Hamby Young, a Division of WESCO Distribution,
Inc., was awarded the procurement contract by The L.E. Myers Co., a subsidiary of MYR Group (Rolling
Meadows, Illinois). Stanley Consulting was retained to perform line design.
“This order underscores the increasing significance of the transmission line market in the U.S. and the
capability of our Hamby Young Division to handle material procurement, packaging, and logistics on large,
complex transmission line and substation projects with critical completion schedules,” said Don Thimjon,
Vice-President, Utility Group, WESCO Distribution. “We are proud to be part of the EPC
(Engineer/Procure/Construct) team with The L.E. Myers Co. and Stanley Consulting.”
The EPC contract awarded to The L.E. Myers Co. includes construction of a 345/161/15kV substation and a
345kV transmission line from MidAmerican’s Council Bluffs Energy Center (CBEC) to the Grimes
substation.
Hamby Young’s procurement and logistics responsibility for the transmission portion of the project consists
of 120 miles of double circuit 345kV and 161kV construction utilizing self-weathering steel monopole
structures, T2-556.5 ACSR conductor, OPGW fiber optic cable with a separate static wire. The
transmission assemblies primarily consist of polymer insulators in a tangent vee configuration. Hamby
Young’s scope of responsibility for the 345/161/15kV substation consists of Tapered Tubular Structures,
Power Transformer, Circuit Breakers, Metering, Control Panels, Station Service, Communication and other
associated equipment. The buswork will be constructed in a tubular bus configuration with flexible
conductor connections to all equipment.
Hamby Young’s role as the procurement arm of The L.E. Myers’ EPC team is to submit, procure, schedule,
and coordinate deliveries for the above referenced scope associated with the Transmission Line and
Substation. Hamby Young is also providing on-site material logistics as a part of their contract.
The project, owned by MidAmerican Energy of Des Moines, Iowa, is the result of a study conducted by
MidAmerican, Omaha Public Power District, Nebraska Public Power District and other joint-owners of the
new Council Bluffs Energy Center. The reliability of MidAmerican’s transmission network will be enhanced
and constraints will be alleviated in and around the utility’s service territory by this project. The transmission
line will also serve as an outflow connection from the new 790-MW generation facility under construction in
Council Bluffs, Iowa.
